THS Choral Music Director

Keith Hancock

Mr. Hancock is in his 23rd year teaching this year, all at Tesoro. Mr. Hancock was recently named the Grammy Music Educator Award winner, chosen out of over 3,500 nominees.  He was also named a top 50 finalist for the Global Teacher Prize, considered the Nobel Prize of teaching, out of 30,000 nominations. Recently, Mr. Hancock was chosen as one of the 10 CMA National Teachers of Excellence and one of the 100 Most Influential People of Orange County by the Orange County Register. In addition, the Tesoro HS music program was named a Grammy Signature School of Excellence, one of five in the country out of over 25,000 high schools. Tesoro High School has also been honored with the SupportMusic Merit Award from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education as one of 100 schools in the nation out of over 100,000 schools.  Mr. Hancock has frequently collaborated with Grammy-award-winning singer-songwriter Jason Mraz, arranging, conducting and recording for his album, Know, and performing with him at the Hollywood Bowl and the FivePoint Amphitheatre.  Ensembles from Tesoro have performed and/or recorded with or opened for a growing list of A-list performers, including Jason Mraz, Sara Bareilles, Colbie Caillat, Johnny Mathis, Five for Fighting, Quentin Tarantino, Mark Lindsay, Take 6, Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, Gordon Goodwin, Ruben Studdard, Natalie Weiss, Eden Espinosa, and Raining Jane.  Mr. Hancock is also a contributor to Careers Through Music, a book and video presented by Alfred Music and the Grammy Museum Foundation.

Mr. Hancock was awarded the Secondary Vocal Music Teacher of the Year by the Orange County Department of Education. The THS Madrigals under his direction have accepted invitations to perform at three ACDA Western Division Conferences, one of the highest honors for a high school choir in the U.S.  Tesoro choirs are multiple winners of the Golden State Choral Competition and they have performed in Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry, and Staples Center.  In addition, the barbershop quartets under his direction have taken first place three times in the Far Western District High School Quartet Championship.  The Tesoro choirs have never earned less than superior at a festival, and the choirs tour annually, performing around the U.S. as well as international locations such as Italy, France, Spain, England, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Canada, Costa Rica, and Mexico.  The Tesoro choirs have performed major choral/orchestral works such as the Mozart Requiem, the Vivaldi Gloria, and the Schubert Mass in G.  In addition to his work as the choral director at Tesoro, he has vocal directed and/or played piano for the last 21 musicals at Tesoro, five of which have earned OC Cappies Best Musical awards.

In addition to his work at Tesoro, Mr. Hancock has served on the Conservatory of Music faculty and directs the annual Summer Vocal Camp at Chapman University, and he also teaches music technology at Tesoro and has previously taught private piano, voice, conducting, and guitar. Performing has always been a part of Mr. Hancock’s life, and he has starred in such shows as Snoopy!, Godspell, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Annie, Peter Pan, The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Oliver!, and Hello, Dolly, and he performed the roles of Curly (Oklahoma) and Marius (Les Miserables) in revue performances at Chapman University. He has also performed several times as a soloist with the Cypress Pops Orchestra, and onstage at Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl, and the Orange County Performing Arts Center. Mr. Hancock holds a M.A. in Education and a B.M. in Music Education and Choral Conducting (Summa cum Laude) from Chapman University, where he was a Presidential Scholar and was awarded the Choral Conducting and the Music Education Awards. In addition, he has music, computers and career/technical education teaching credentials, and is certified in the Kodaly methodology. He also received extensive musical theatre training while attending the Orange County High School of the Arts. In addition to working at THS, Mr. Hancock is the music director at Compass Bible Church in Aliso Viejo and is a professional portrait and wedding photographer (Bel Canto Photography). He also does freelance work as a pianist, vocalist, accompanist, arranger, clinician, adjudicator, and recording engineer. He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education and Southern California Vocal Association. Mr. Hancock has been married to his beautiful wife and fellow music teacher, Carly, since 2003, and they have two sons, Joel and Chase.

Assistant Director

Mikayla Feldman

Mikayla Feldman has served as the Assistant Director of the Grammy-recognized choral program at Tesoro High School since 2018. She received her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Chapman University, before going on to receive her Master of Arts in Education with a focus on teaching. In addition to her work at Tesoro, she serves on faculty at Chapman University as conductor of the University Treble Choir.

Driven by a desire to equip young singers with practical tools across all styles of singing, she has worked to translate technical and performance concepts into curricula that feels accessible at any level. In 2020, she developed several YouTube series on singing, vocal health, music theory, and performance anxiety. Her channel contains over 60 educational videos aimed at youth and young adults, and is featured by the American Choral Directors Association as an official resource for K-12 choral educators. It has been used in high school and collegiate classrooms across Southern California and viewed over 240,000 times. In 2022, her academic writing on performance anxiety in the choral classroom was published in ChorTeach, ACDA’s professional K-12 education journal.

Feldman is a member of the National Association of Teachers for Singing, and holds a pedagogical certification from New York Vocal Coaching. She continues to teach private voice, and enjoys helping students discover how to sing each note with maximum ease of expression. She works on the Chapman Choral Music Camp staff each summer as an ensemble director, voice teacher, and music technology instructor. Outside of the classroom, she has served for over 12 years as a worship leader, music director, vocal director, and instrumentalist in churches, and enjoys working with singers and musicians in this setting.
